What I'm Doing To Get Fit

Ok, I said I wasn't going to post smoothie recipes and post a lot about fitness (I really don't think I'm in the position to do that anyway) but the amount of you here and on Instagram that wanted to know about my fitness routine and  what I've been eating to lose weight was so overwhelming, and since we're all friends here, I'm going to try and briefly go over my plan.

The first thing I decided to do wasn't to add healthy foods and workouts into my life, it was to cut out all of the bad habits and bad food. I use the "my fitness pal" app and enter my goal weight it gives me a calorie limit I adhere to in order to reach that weight, simple. A couple of years ago I used the app and lost around 35 pounds! Calorie counting gives me a perspective of portion control, I know it isn't for everyone but it is important to know what you're eating.
I pretty much use all of the "tricks" and advice you've probably heard about fitness and weight loss. I eat around 5 small meals, drink 8-10 glasses of water, lots of green tea, I have either fruit or vegetables with every meal. For my workouts, I try to get cardio, weight strengthening, and yoga in about 5-6 days a week, all at home for now. I'm using the Insanity videos and other videos and workouts I find on pinterest. There's no way around it, eat healthy, eat less, workout and you'll lose weight.

Again, this is just what's worked and is working for me, I have friends who had amazing results from Weight Watchers, juice cleanses, carb-free diets, etc. but for me, I want something that I can do forever, a healthy lifestyle and awareness for what I'm putting in my body so I can be healthy for the rest of my life.
Have any advice for me? I'm always wanting to learn more!

And for those of you curious about what I put in my smoothies, here it is. I just try to keep them a vessel for fruit but I'm making a green one next!
Top smoothie: 1/2 cup of almond plain milk, 1 cup mango, 1/2 cup strawberries, 1 banana
280 calories
Bottom smoothie: 1/2 cup almond plain milk, 1 cup mixed berries (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries) 3/4 cup mango, 1/2 of a banana.
200 calories

  1. Thank you so much! I am one of those Instagram followers who asked for the workout plan ;] I appreciate it. I had no idea of the Fitness Pal app and just downloaded that. I totally agree with wanting to get healthy for life and being totally conscious of what you are putting in your body. Way to go on losing the weight and thanks for being an inspiration!

  2. The top smoothie looks delicious - I love how you served it in a mason jar, hehe. Looks like a mini tropical vacation!

I learned that it's more realistic for some people to count inches, not pounds. One of the people I know who really takes care of herself with working out and eating right said that some people get confused because they gain weight after exercise and eating right. That's because muscle weighs more than fat, so she likes to measure progress by inches lost as well.

Eating vegan as much as possible is a good thing too (though, I'm very bad at doing it!). I went on a vegan detox for a week, and I felt so much better in just 2 or 3 days! I felt really light, and I had so much energy and didn't feel tired throughout the day. Unfortunately I don't have the discipline to do that regularly, so I try to at least eat vegetarian on most days.

    1. That's a great idea, counting inches! I'll probably do both though. I was vegan for about 3 years and I wasn't very healthy, vegan diets can be very healthy (obviously) just like vegetarian or meat eating diets but it goes the other way too. I know a lot of people who did it to lose weight but there's just as much vegan junk food out there. So, it's still good to be conscience of what you're eating and what it means to your body. Personally I've been vegetarian for over a decade and I still have struggles with food.

    2. That totally crossed my mind - I guess eating vegan/vegetarian the right way? There was a point where I tried to be vegetarian for the sake of being healthy, but found myself eating tons of processed food and carbs instead of fruits and veggies. Which totally defeats the point of eating right to be healthy.

    3. True! My biggest challenge as a vegetarian is limiting my intake of breads and pastas (even whole wheat) and vegan ice cream with coconut milk, so delicious, so high in calories. That being said, I get your point and I totally believe in vegan/vegetarian diets but it's not a magic solution, at least not for me.

  3. Yum! Smoothies look so yummy. I agree with becky above. The key to really being healthy is veganism. It's hard for me too and I wouldn't call yself vegan but I've learned to swap out certain processed foods with whole foods when I can. It gets easier!

    1. Like I said to Becky, I think veganism is awesome and can be super healthy but so can diets involving lean meats or vegetarian diets, raw food diets, etc. they still all have their downsides. Sugar and bread are big causes of weight gain and being unhealthy and they exist in vegan diets. I think a healthy balance is really what's key. But I agree, limit or getting rid of processed foods for whole foods is important but I think that's attainable for anyones diet or lifestyle!

  4. Awesome! I'm so glad that you're eating right! I started on the getting healthy journey last year in February actually. I lost 30 pounds and didn't maintain very well because I went back to eating crap. I gained 8. :\
I have although already lost five. Yay!
I'm doing low-carb because I have found that I feel so much better eating less carbs and I don't want to get into the politics of it but in the long run it's been found to be healthier. Low-carb\ High fat something that's more readily available in nature. Anyway, I really need to start using the fitness pal app also, haven't done it in a while.
I'm not too sure what you're using to workout but I LOVE blogilates. It's a combo of pilates, plyometrics, and cardio. They're all on youtube and she also has a website.
You should check it out if you haven't seen it before.
Wow! That was a long response. Ha. Anyway.. go you!

  5. I don't want to lose much weight myself, but I'd like to be healthier and get toned. Soon I'm going to join a new gym that opened near me, so hopefully I'll actually go. hehe

I also love low carb, I think it's great!

  6. I really need to get a my fitness app because I feel like I'm all over the place with the dieting and eating healthy. I really have no idea what I'm actually doing...but I like that your cutting out the bad foods. I think that's my problem. I'm keeping some of the bad foods and just adding good foods to them.

Keep at it girl! I have to try to drink smoothies too!! =) They can be so yummy!!

I really appreciate this post. It's a good reminder for me that leading a healthy lifestyle doesn't have to be this big daunting challenge. Choosing healthier options is such a simple way to lose a bit of weight and it's amazing what differences I see in myself when I actually think about portion sizes!

    Thanks for the motivation ;)

  14. I love My Fitness Pal! It helped me lose about 30 lbs after I quit drinking and didn't know how to replace all that sugar and empty calories with, like, real food! LOL Now it keeps me on track.
